As the Iranian lake’s waters have shrunk over the hot summer months, it has become saltier, providing a feast for microscopic organisms that thrive on salt and light – and turn water the disturbing red colour.
The strange sight was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on Nasa’s Aqua satellite.
