Later that century, the mosque, like many other buildings in Afghanistan, was subjected to the destructive whims of Genghis Khan. Virtually destroyed, architects before and during Timurid era (AD1300-1400) rebuilt a grander mosque atop its ruins. The intricate bottom layer is the remainder of the Ghurid foundations, while the brick overlay is a relic of the Timurid era. (Credit: Alexandra Reynolds)
