The most colourful job in the world?
A feast for the eyes
Intricate mosaics swathe the mosque’s exterior. Though the overall effect is still breath taking, years of hardship and destruction from the Anglo-Afghan wars have claimed many of the tiles, and recent expansions demand new designs. Much of the responsibility for the restoration effort is left in the hands of nine men who toil away in small workshops on the mosque’s periphery. (Credit: Alexandra Reynolds)
