The cycle continues
For the next several hundred years, the mosque continued to grow along with the city of Herat, until again much of it was demolished during the Anglo-Afghan wars in the 19th and 20th Centuries. Much of what stands today is a product of restorations from 1945 to 1970, but Afghanistan has since plunged into another war, and has yet to emerge. (Credit: Alexandra Reynolds)
