Many of the tile patterns are drawn by pencil by an old teacher working quietly in a corner. Once a pattern is finished, tiny holes are punctured along its lines, and the pattern is transferred to glazed white tiles by tapping charcoal through the holes. The charcoal lines are then traced with black paint. (Credit: Alexandra Reynolds)
