Kilns for baking the tiles are in a dark room by the workshop’s entrance, idling next to piles of white wood from the outskirts of Herat. Though the English name of the tree escaped him, Hassan stressed the importance of this particular wood for firing: it produces a fine ash, sometimes used for making glazes, and less smoke.
